FREEPORT ROTARY SPONSORS 17th ANNUAL ROAD RACE
Freeport, Maine, May 15, 2012 – The Freeport Rotary Club is sponsoring its 17th Annual Close to the Coast 5K and 10K Road Races. The races will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Winslow Park in Freeport, Maine.
The race is part of the Winslow Park Family Fun Day, a great time for families with all the events and park admission free of charge. The events start with a Kids’ 1K Fun Run at 10 am with prizes for kids provided by Wilbur’s of Maine. Additional, there is free admission to the Winslow Park for the day. Hotdogs, ice cream, games, swimming, activities, playground and a moon bounce house will be available. Oceanside camping is available for those wanting to stay over night for a fee.
The races start at 9:00 am and race participants can register between 7:15 am and 8:45 am that morning. The registration fee is $20 per participant with proceeds going to student educational scholarships and for local community projects through the Freeport Rotary Club. Prizes for the top two finishers in each age category are assorted fruit pies from Orchard Hill Farm in Hebron, Maine. We pride ourselves on both the course and our pies! The course is run on quiet roads and forest trails along the ocean in beautiful Winslow Park, the home of the Lobsterman Triathlon. For the past 17 years we have been giving away pies to our top finishers, totaling 80 pies per year. It is safe to say we are the only race in New England that does this.
Last year, a total of 250 runners took part in the 2011 Close to the Coast Road Race. The race director, Dr Jim Hendricks hopes to exceed that number this year. Each year the race is able to raise approximately $4,000, which is then given back to the Freeport community through student scholarships and local services. For more race information please contact Dr Hendricks at email@example.com or (207) 865-1183.
The Freeport Rotary Club, formed in 1983, is a diverse group of over 45 business and professional people from the Freeport area. Its mission is to provide service to those in need, in the greater Freeport community and around the world.
