Brunswick Youth Program Earns State Wide Award, Again!!!

On October 20, 2011 The Riverview-Brunswick 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) was presented with the 2011 Maine After-school Network’s (MASN) Exemplary Program Award.  Nina Henrikson, Riverview’s 21st CCLC Program director officially accepted the award in front of over 500 participants during the annual Light’s On After-school Celebration at the Franco American Heritage Center in Lewiston, ME.  The annual award is based on statewide nominations and is linked to student progress, parent engagement and positive community impact. This is the third time in four years that Riverview Foundation’s youth programs have been recognized as among the best in the state.  Riverview’s AIM Program was awarded the MASN Exemplary Award in 2008 and in 2009, the Riverview AIM program serving Brunswick, Biddeford and Bath drew statewide acclaim as one of five of the nation’s best youth programs identified through nomination and popular contest vote sponsored by Clorox on Facebook.

Riverview Foundation programming characteristically includes curriculum to support physical and mental health, promote success in-school, encourage healthy choice making and fun with friends and family. The Foundation’s programs target out-of-school time hours for children and youth age 6-18 year round. Outdoor learning, relaxation, cultural and artistic exploration, physical fitness and community service offer a blend of activities that build peer relationships and engage students with the world around them. The Riverview/Brunswick 21st CCLC also offers a uniquely designed Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum, aligned with Maine educational standards and linked directly to Brunswick School Department academic goals.

On, November 18, 2011, MASN Director Deb Chase will make an official presentation of the Exemplary Program Award to Brunswick community members during an open invitation celebration at the Big Top Deli on Maine Street.  The event will be ongoing from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm with 50% of the evening sales generously being donated to the Riverview-Brunswick 21st CCLC by the Deli’s owner, Tony Sachs.

A partnership between Riverview Foundation, Brunswick School Department and Maine Department of Education currently provides afterschool and summer programming to youth enrolled in grades 3-8 in Brunswick schools.  Riverview’s programming model (or Youth Horizons) includes goals for cultivating local, regional, state and federal funding sources necessary to maintain low-cost, no cost access to program participation to any child, regardless of their ability to pay program tuition.    The Riverview-Brunswick 21st CCLC program operated 1,596 hours of programming, served 163 youth and provided $8,114 in scholarships to Brunswick families during the 2010– 2011 school year.

Riverview Foundation is a community-based organization providing educational and wilderness programs for youth and adults throughout Southern, Central and Mid-coast Maine. With state-wide teaching locations, programs, partners, and community networks, Riverview is proud to be taking our founding mission and sharing it with the communities of Maine each year.
