For the 2nd consecutive year, Maine Eastern Railroad will join with the News Center teams at WCSH-6 and WLBZ-2 for their annual Coats & Toys for Kids Day season kick-off, with a special train on Saturday December 3rd.  The train component resulted in a significant increase in the collection of winter clothing and toys last year, according to a railroad spokesman.

As an added treat, News Center’s “Storm Center” celebrity, Togus the Cat, will be along for the ride.  Like last year, Togus will ride the train from Brunswick Station to Rockland Station, with a stop in between at Bath Station.  Collection boxes will be at each location, and Togus will be available for photos and cat-chat.

Togus belongs to News Center reporter Don Carrigan. The subject of a book released earlier this year, Togus: A Coon Cat Finds a Home; the 26-pound Maine Coon Cat has become renowned for his appearances on the Pine Tree state’s NBC affiliate stations during stormy winter mornings.

Togus will be greeting visitors onboard the decorated-for-the-holidays Maine Eastern train at the station in Brunswick at 16 Station Avenue from 8:00 to 9:00 AM; at the station in Bath at 15 Commercial Street from 9:30 to 10:30 AM; and at the station in Rockland at 4 Union Street, between Noon and 12:45 PM.

Fans of the friendly feline are invited to spend some time with Togus at any of the three train stations, when they drop off their new and lightly used children’s coats, along with new, unwrapped toys on that day.

The visit with Togus does not include a train ride, and the train will not be accepting passengers that morning.  Families will be able to meet Togus, and then enjoy hot cocoa provided by the Maine Energy Marketers Association, [MEMA], after leaving the train.

In addition to Maine Eastern Railroad, several organizations collaborate annually on the Coats & Toys for Kids Day program, including: MEMA; the Shaw's and Hannaford Supermarkets; Pratt-Abbott Cleaners; Pepsi; and The Salvation Army.
