Bath Police arrest two men after vehicle and foot chase

BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Sagadahoc Sheriff's Office received a complaint of a motor vehicle driving recklessly on the State Road in West Bath, heading toward Bath. Another motorist reported seeing the vehicle drive on the roadside curbing as well as swerving all over the roadway. The vehicle was described as a white SUV.

Deputy Shiers responded to the complaint and asked for assistance from the Bath Police Department to locate the vehicle.

Bath Police Officers responded to the area to assist. Deputy Shiers spotted the vehicle on Richardson Street as it turned onto Matty Way in Bath. Deputy Shiers observed the vehicle pull into a driveway. He the positioned his cruiser in the roadway but the vehicle was able to back up and turn around. Deputy Shiers had exited his vehicle and began shouting at the operator to stop. The operator drove towards Deputy Shiers and accelerated in an attempt to strike him with the vehicle. Luckily, Dep. Shiers was able to avoid being struck by the SUV.

Deputy Shiers radioed to other responding units what had occurred. Bath Police Officers attempted to stop the vehicle with lights and sirens as the car traveled east on Richardson Street and turned left onto High Street heading north.

The operator of the fleeing SUV stopped at the stop sign on High Street by Court Street.and then fled on foot. The passenger remained in the vehicle and was later taken into custody.

Bath Police Officers chased the operator on foot. The fleeing operator ran from the officers on Court Street, then jumped a resident's fence, ran across Route 1 where he was eventually apprehended by Bath Police Officers in the parking lot of Bert's Exxon.

The driver of the white SUV was identified as James Badger, 26, of Bath. He was charged with Aggravated Reckless Conduct, Eluding an Officer, Operating Under the Influence and Operating After License Suspension. Badger was also wanted for three active arrest warrants for Failure to Pay Fine-OUI, Failure to Pay Fine-Possession of Drugs and Theft. The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Weston Gardner, 24, of Bath. Gardner was arrested and charged with a Probation Violation and there was an active warrant for Failure to Pay Fine-OUI.

Neither Badger nor Gardner were able to post bail and were taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
