Cranky. That's how I've felt this past week. My immune system was working overtime trying to fight off a cold. The deadlines for a couple of freelance writing projects had arrived. I made a commitment to volunteer at a wonderful and worthy weekend event when I really needed to be working at the computer. I had homework.

Every year, Shalom House presents two Hope Awards to people who are making a difference in the lives of people living with mental illness. Shalom House, which is based in Portland, provides community support services and safe, affordable housing for people with serious mental illness.

Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear, owners of Coffee By Design, will receive the 2013 Johnson & Korda Innovation Award. The award recognizes exceptional community service that supports creative and effective programs for people with mental illness.

Calin Stoicov MD, PhD has joined Mid Coast Medical Group – Gastroenterology and the active medical staff of Mid Coast Hospital. He joins group partners, Dr. Migeul Arguedas and Dr. Gary Zartarian, in offering high quality diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases with an emphasis on patient-centered care.

Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Stoicov earned his medical degree from the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University “N.Testemitanu” of the Republic of Moldova. He completed a combined residency and PhD program followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His training includes general gastroenterology and liver transplant.
