Maine Lighthouse Museum on Rockland’s waterfront has opened for the summer

Maine Lighthouse Museum on Rockland’s waterfront has opened for the summer

The Maine Lighthouse Museum on Rockland’s waterfront has opened for the summer season with a number of changes. As well as a new exhibit and a new gift shop, the entrance of the building now sports a restored 60-foot flag-pole.

The old flag-pole was removed with a crane by Kenny Follet of Journey’s End, who took it to Rockland Marine, where their skilled staff, blasted, primed and painted it. In the meantime, Maine Lighthouse Museum President Paul Dilger and volunteers from the Coast Guard also pitched in with scraping and painting the stand that holds the flag-pole. When the flag-pole restoration was completed, Kenney Follet, again using a crane, gently replaced the gigantic flag pole back in its stand. Almost immediately, the U.S. flag was hoisted. Dilger said they would like to fly a larger flag, but the cost to purchase one is not in the museum’s budget.
