National Charter Schools Week – Maine has joined the movement

In 2011, Maine joined 40 other states in allowing public charter school options for families of all income levels.  On May 1, 2012, the Maine Charter School Commission issued its first application package for potential founders of these new public education options, which are free to parents and open to all children without admissions tests.

The Maine Association for Charter Schools (MACS) will celebrate the great work accomplished by public charter schools across the country, where over 5,000 public chartered schools are serving 1.8 million students.

Mere Creek Golf Club in Brunswick Opens for the Season!

On January 1st, Mere Creek Golf Club hosted a New Year's Day tournament to ring in 2012. Less than two and a half months later, the Club has "re-opened" for the season.

"Every golfer hopes for an early spring and an early opening," says Mere Creek's general manager, Kevin Joseph. "It looks like we're getting both."

After a successful and unexpectedly long 2011 season (Mere Creek played almost without interruption from mid April through January 1st), Joseph is enthusiastic about 2012's March 12th opening. "There was a lot of excitement last year," he says. "The golf course saw its best conditions ever in 2011. Everyone is anxious to get back out there and play... and we're thrilled to see our members and guests again so soon."

Mere Creek Golf Club is located just off Route 123 in Brunswick, a few minutes south of Bowdoin College. It is part of Brunswick Landing, formerly Naval Air Station Brunswick.

Statewide Ice Fishing Derby

The statewide ice fishing derby will go on as scheduled this weekend. This is not to be confused with the cancellation of the Sebago derby that was called off two weeks ago. There are twenty weigh stations from Acton to St.Francis where anglers can bring their catches and compete for over $20,000 in prizes. Also if anyone is lucky enough to break the State record on togue (31 lbs. 8 oz) they will win a bonus of $100,000. To find out more information go to Proceeds benefit charities all across Maine.
